Historical Society
Through historical storytelling by the descendants of the pioneering Geers, visitors become acquainted with the history of the Northwest, from ancient times before Lewis and Clark to the present. Relatives of the founding family include Theodore Thurston Geer, first native born governor of Oregon, Homer Davenport, internationally renowned polictical cartoonist for William Randolph Hearst, Musa Geer, first woman to climb Mt. Jefferson and Pearl Geer, co-founder of Silverton's Liberal University and Broadway stage and Hollywood screen actor.
Every year we open GeerCrest Farm to the community and provide educational period exhibits, activities, cartoons, entertainment and stories in collaboration with the Homer Davenport Community Festival in Historic Silverton. The farm was the childhood home of Homer's mother and his grandparents and the place where he spent much time growing up after his mother died when he was a little boy. Davenport Arabians now roam the farm to honor Homer's Legacy as one of the most instrumental pioneers of procurement of the Arabian Breed here in the United States.
As our population continues to increase in an urbanized world, the connections to history and our land seem to slowly slip away. With a focus on agrarian culture and honoring the heritage of those who came before us including the stories and life ways of indigenous native tribes in the Willamette Valley, GeerCrest Farm & Historical Society has become an oasis of remembrance and rare experience where young and old alike can feel a rhythm that we all share.
